A number of scientific studies on the impact of both of these programmes have been commissioned, as well as a socio-economic benefit study for both programmes, in order to support the decision-making process. To advance weather forecasting at global and regional scales, EUMETSAT is preparing to add a new operational wind profiling observation capability to the EUMETSAT Polar System (EPS-Aeolus), in addition to a microwave sounding capacity with constellation of six micro-satellites distributed in three orbital planes (EPS-Sterna). The importance of satellite observations for forecasting at centres throughout Europe is reflected in the significant increase in their use within NWP systems: the number of satellite observations ingested into computer models has typically increased by more than one order of magnitude over the last decade. Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) systems form the basis of modern forecasting. ![]()
